Abstract: The reduction of formaldehyde by electrol.ysis to methane is the key reaction of the hydrocarbon cycle. in this report a systematic investigation with different electrodes was performed in aqueous and non-aqueous electrolytes. Energetic considerations of the reaction-mechanism, intermediate products and bonding energies led to a limited number of parameter combinations and showed the critical aspects. The experiments only resulted in low current efficiency (< 10 %) and energy efficiency (high overvoltages) . Favourable conditions are raised temperatures ( $\sim$ 90$^\circ$) and acidic, aqueous medium. Favourable electrodes are Raney-platinum, ruthenium coated platinum or palladium/silver (gas diffusion electrode) and zinc.
